ABSTRACT

In search for animal model of systemic candidiasis, the authors attempted to infect the mice with Candida albicans (CUMD 23 and CUMD 25) isolated from human subjeets and study the mode of infection and pathogenesis. Swiss mice were inoculated with these organisrns either intravenously or intraperitoneally. After deterrnining the lethal doses of the pathogens at 30th day, another group of mice were inoculated with a sublethal dose. They were sacrificed weekly up to 4 weeks and the organs were examined mycologically and histopathologically. The results show that strain CUMD 23 is more virulent than CUMD 25. The most susceptible organ to C. albicans is the kidney followed by the peritoneum, mesentery and the pancreas. In the early lesion, C. atbicans generally show the spore form in the peritoneum, mesentery and the kidney when injected intraperitonea, lly but as time went by it rather took the hyphal form especially in the kidney. In the case of intravenous injection, the hyphal masses were seen in the kidney more quickly. With this result, it is suggested that the dissemination of C. albicans occurs easily in the latter and the spores reaching the kidney transform into hyphae which are not easily subjected to phagocytosis.

ABSTRACT

The distribution of the patterns of pubic hair and axillary hair was observed in 1970 men and 1761 women from 17 to 59 years of age. Among the 4 types usually found, the horizontal type predominated in male pubic hair irrespective of age, and the acuminate type, sagittal type and the disperse type followed in order. In the fernale public hair patterns, two new types were observed: a "linear type" and a "few type". The horizontal type was the predominant form and the acuminate type, the linear type, the few type, the disperse type and the sagittal type came in order. Women with no pubic hair rna,de up 4.4% of the total. But the patterns of pubic hair changed with age toward the types of little hair count such as the few and the linear type. In the axillary hair patterns of men, the whole type predominated and the brachial type, the central type came in order and men with no axillary hair made up 8.0% of the total. This distr!bution also changed with age, the central type being the commonest type in advanced age. In the a,xillary hair patterns of women, the whole type also predominated but with age, the numters of persons with no axillary hair increased. As to the relation of the body weight and the hair pattern, no conspicuous relation was found except for the female pubic hair pattern. In this group, persons below ideal body weight had low hair count, with statistical significance.

ABSTRACT

Adenosine deaminase (adenosine aminohydrolase, AL)A), which catalyzes the deamination of adenosine to yield inosine and amrnonia, was assayed in human penile foreskin. The skin tissue was separated into two layers; epidermis and dermis. They were sliced with scissors into gel state, 4 volumes of 0.05M phosphate buffer solution were added and the tissue homogenized. After centrifugation at 4,000xg for 5 minutes, the supernatant was used as an enzyme solution. ADA activity was measured according to the method f Giuseppe" ADA was found to be present in both layers (epidermis; 0.24 OD/mg protein, dermis; 0.19 OD/mg protein) with slightly higher activity in the epidermis. As in earlier reports, it was found that ADA in the skin showed nearly even activity in the pH range of 5.0-8.0. Considering the significance of ADA in immunological function, the presence of ADA in the skin suggests that the tissue may participate in the immune function.
